Being Green Even When it isn’t Easy

I recently had to fill out a survey. One of the questions was, “Are you green even when it is inconvenient?” Well that got me thinking.

When we are in our home it is easy being green most of the time. We shop conscientiously of what we buy. We make sure we buy everything we can naturally. We make sure if we buy things in containers that they are recyclable. We carry cloth bags in our cars to carry home our purchases. We cook from scratch to give our families the best nutrition and variety. These are all things we do to live green and naturally.

But what about those times when we aren’t at home? What about those times when we are traveling? What about that simple trip to the “big city” for an outing?

I love eating out on the road. My weakness is Egg McMuffins. Now I can make these at home. But there is just something about getting them from that drive through window that … well there is just nothing like it. My guilty little sin.

But look at what comes with my Egg McMuffin. Well first it is wrapped in the wax paper stuff. They put in at least half a dozen napkins. OK so there is only one of me, do I look that messy? And well if I am going through the drive through you know I have to have an iced coffee. We all know that cup isn’t recyclable.

So what can we do? I wonder if we all wrote to them if they would offer choices? Probably not. It is fast food. We do need to be conscience of our choices though. Being green and eating naturally is not always easy.

Small things such as taking only one napkin can help. Go into the fast food restaurant to place your order instead of the drive through can help as well. Don’t take a handful of those condiment packages. Take only what you need. When getting your drink don’t take a plastic top or straw unless you are taking it with you. These may seem like very small things, but if everyone did their part it will make a difference.

Have any ideas how to make a difference in fast food or while traveling? Would love to hear them!
